The 2024 Nova Scotia general election was held on November 26, 2024, to elect members to the 65th General Assembly of Nova Scotia.

The incumbent Progressive Conservative Association of Nova Scotia (PC) government, led by Premier Tim Houston since 2021, called a snap election and won a second consecutive majority government – it is the first landslide win for the PCs since 1984, recording its best seat result in party history. The Nova Scotia New Democratic Party, led by Claudia Chender, formed the official opposition for the first time since 2006. The Nova Scotia Liberal Party, led by Zach Churchill, recorded its worst result in party history.

“Nova Scotia voters handed Tim Houston’s Progressive Conservatives a supermajority government in Tuesday’s provincial election, a formidable outcome aided in part by the stunning collapse of Liberal support…Houston and the Tories were elected in 43 ridings… The New Democrats were elected in nine ridings, while the Liberals were elected in two…While Tuesday’s big win was bestowed upon the Progressive Conservatives, the NDP also made notable gains…NDP Leader Claudia Chender is slated to become the first elected female leader of the Opposition.”

Remarkably to some of us, “Environment” and Forests/Forestry were simply not an issue that garnered any significant public discussion in this election.

Here are five main promises from the re-elected Tory government:

— Cut the harmonized sales tax by one percentage point, to 14 per cent, by April 1.
— Increase the basic personal exemption on the Nova Scotia income tax to $11,744 from $8,744.
— Impose a cap on electricity rate increases that will be based on the average of rate hikes across the country.
— Establish a 30-member provincial travel nurse team to help areas with nursing shortages.
— Reduce the small business tax rate to 1.5 per cent from 2.5 per cent, and increase the small business tax threshold to $700,000 from $500,000.
