In the chaos of the last two weeks, you may have missed that John Lohr MLA Kings North’s Bill 198 (Financial Measures Act) is attempting to increase tax for forest landowners not currently involved in forestry activities. “The Forest Act is being updated to make clear that if forest land is being used for commercial carbon-sequestration transitions and not engaged in forestry activity, it cannot qualify for a preferential municipal tax rate.
“The forestry land taxation rate is very low,” said Lohr. “If the land is essentially being taken out of forestry, it’s obviously the opinion of our government that it shouldn’t attract that very low rate.”
