Biodiversity Conservation and Forestry Technical Reports…

DRAFTING

This page is a subpage of nsforestmatters.ca/Links/NS Gov Info

“The Biodiversity Conservation and Forestry Technical Report Series (TRS) is the Nova Scotia Department of Natural Resources and Renewables’ primary means to document and distribute peer-reviewed scientific and technical research findings, along with associated conclusions and recommendations, relating to biodiversity conservation and forestry in Nova Scotia

“The TRS accommodates five types of reports: research reports, technical notes, information bulletins, reports of activities, and reference guides.”

Currently it lists 4 items under “Biodiversity Conservation Publications” and 6 under “Forestry Publications“, all 2021 and later (some are updates of older docs), evidently corresponding with the current government’s tenure.

As copied from the NRR webpage on Sep 5, 2024 [#X inserted for reference here; some reformatting of the citations to highlight the topics]:

Biodiversity Conservation Publications

Forestry Publications

Thx to M.A. for bringing this page to our attention.

Under “Forestry Publications” I was interested to see this one:

Steenberg, James WN & O’Keefe, Rob N (2024). Nova Scotia Forest Carbon Calculator (NSFCC): Overview, Methodology, and Application (PDF).

It’s a March 2024 Report. “The purpose of this research report is to describe a forest carbon web application developed by the Nova Scotia Department of Natural Resources and Renewables (NSDNRR). The Nova Scotia Forest Carbon Calculator (NSFCC; https://ns-resource- analysis.shinyapps.io/nsfcc/) was developed in response to the above needs and values and to support Nova Scotians in integrating carbon into their forest planning and management.”

COMMENT (David P, Aug 22, 2024)

Oh Oh: I got this message when I clicked on the Nova Scotia Forest Carbon Calculator link: “Authorization Required. Access to this content is restricted. “

I wrote James Steenberg to request access and ask why the page is restricted;  within less than a day I received this response:

“Glad you saw it! I strongly recommend you read the accompanying report as well to understand the various caveats, applications, and limitations – it’s part of the Department’s peer reviewed report series and was reviewed by two experts: https://novascotia.ca/natr/library/forestry/reports/2024-001-forestry-research-report.pdf

“The app is not restricted, it’s just a function of me being a researcher not a programmer. I do my work in R and R has a platform called Shiny where you can publish a web app from R code. It makes it easier for scientists to get tools public without major software/programming bottlenecks. They have an authorization/login procedure that’s required. I contacted the platform to see if it was possible to change the text to say they should contact us to get authorization but only the default text is possible. We are in the process of adding these instructions to the DNRR website.

“The only thing that’s required for anyone to be authorized is to contact me – people then get an email from the app with registration/login instructions (check your junk if you don’t see it, I just added you). Please contact me if there are any issues.

“I’ll be putting on a public webinar with an overview and instructions sometime in September, stand by for that invitation.”
